Dehradun, 23 Sep: Newly elected MLA from Bageshwar seat, Parvati Das took the oath of office and secrecy here today. Assembly Speaker, Ritu Khanduri Bhushan, administered the oath to the MLA at her chamber in the Assembly Building. On this occasion, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prem Chand Aggarwal were also present.
It may be recalled that the by-poll on Bageshwar Assembly constituency was necessitated after the incumbent MLA and Cabinet Minister Chandan Ram Das passed away due to prolonged illness in April this year. Following this, the constituency was declared as vacant and the polling on this seat was held on 5 September with the counting done on 8. BJP had chosen to field Chandan Ram Das’s widow Parvati Das as the party candidate, ostensibly to derive the advantage of public sympathy for Chandan Ram Das, who had won from this seat continuously since 2007 assembly elections.
During the oath taking ceremony held at the Speaker’s Office at the Vidhan Sabha Bhawan, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended his best wishes to Parvati Das and he also expressed gratitude to the people of Bageshwar for making her victorious. He said that for the first time in the history of Bageshwar, people have elected a woman as their MLA.
Pushkar Dhami expressed confidence that Parvati Ramdas will successfully be able to complete the unfinished work and agenda of her late husband Chandan Ram Das who had nurtured this constituency with utmost devotion. Ministers Premchand Aggarwal, Saurabh Bahuguna, BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt were present during the oath taking and they too extended their wishes and greetings to the newly elected MLA Parvati Das on the occasion.
In the Bageshwar Assembly by-election, BJP candidate Parvati Das had won by a margin of 2405 votes. BJP had also considered fielding the son of Chandan Ram Das but later decided to place its bet on the widow of Chandan Ram Das.
