Officer trainees at IISWC make field visit to learn river management, fisheries development

Dehradun, 12 Jan: Officer trainees of the 4-month regular training on Soil and Water Conservation and Watershed Management underway from 8 October, 2023, to 7 February, 2024, at the Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (ICAR-IISWC), were shown various field situations and conservation strategies for River Management and Fisheries Development as means of resource conservation and livelihood security, here, today.

Dr M Muruganandam, Principal Scientist and Head (PME & KM Unit), IISWC, conducted the field exposure visit and demonstrated the understandings that they had gained during in-door classes, at the field situations. The trainees were exposed to successful fish farming unit and Song River stretches at Doiwala for practical understanding right at the field and to comprehend the needs and means of resource management and conservation.

The officer-trainees interacted with the resource persons and got clarified various field related problems. During the exposure visit, fish farming, water quality, biodiversity assessment and measurement and field-based conservation models and systems besides field instruments, techniques and procedures followed in soil and water sampling, and analysis, SWC measurements implemented for river health, and riparian-zone assessment and management were demonstrated. This is one of such field and practical visits besides indoor classes conducted for categorical understanding of various topical interests included in the whole training programme.

The ongoing course is the 126th batch of training organised at the Institute, wherein 23 officer trainees from different states of the country are participating. Lalit Singh Bist, one of the successful fish farmers, interacted with the trainees and shared his experiences with them. Rakesh Kumar, Chief Technical Officer, IISWC facilitated the field training.
