Dehradun, 8 Jan: Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) had directed all universities to select research projects based on their expertise under the “One University–One Research” initiative, for the contribution to state welfare. In this context, on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Medical University, Prof MLB Bhatt, presented an update to the Governor at Raj Bhawan. The Vice-Chancellor informed that the university is actively working on research related to “Enhancing Trauma Care in Government District Hospitals of Uttarakhand.”
Prof Bhatt explained that the research is being conducted in collaboration with AIIMS Rishikesh, focusing on the base hospitals in Srinagar and Haldwani. The university’s research suggests strengthening emergency services, ensuring treatment prioritization for critical patients, and conducting mandatory training programs for doctors and staff. Additionally, the formation of dedicated trauma teams for effective management during major disasters or accidents is being recommended.
The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized the need to improve referral processes, develop detailed guidelines and protocols, and establish agreements with nearby trauma centers for seamless patient referrals, ambulance services, and emergency assistance. He also suggested updating hospital disaster management plans with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
The Governor appreciated the progress made in the research and stated that it is moving in the right direction. He mentioned that the final recommendations from the research would be shared with the Uttarakhand Government and the Ministry of Health, Government of India, for further strengthening of health services.
Also present during the meeting were Additional Secretary Swati S Bhadauria and Joint Director of Information Dr Nitin Upadhyay.
