Empowering Rural Women
By OUR STAFF REPORTER
Dehradun, 16 Nov: In a transformative initiative, REAP Dehradun presents an integrated success story, seamlessly intertwining two inspiring narratives that underscore the resilience and skill of women in the region.
Miniature Handicrafts & Pahadi Cap – A Collective Triumph:
In the picturesque region of Doiwala and Sahaspur Blocks, women from Gaayatri Sankul Federation and Ma Mahalakshmi Self Help Group, both formed under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, embarked on a journey to revive traditional arts, Miniature Handicrafts (Hathkargha), and the Pahadi Cap.
Miniature Handicrafts – Hathkargha:
Despite exceptional craftsmanship, women in Doiwala faced challenges accessing suitable markets for their products. Recognising their potential, REAP stepped in, bridging the gap. Through the Hilans brand, the project not only brought these creations to market but also empowered women by creating a sustainable source of income.
The initiative gained momentum when Project Director Nikita Khandelwal and Chief Development Officer Jharana Kamthan encouraged the creation of souvenirs for the Chardham Yatra route. The result? A thriving enterprise producing and selling souvenirs, with a turnover of more than Rs 4 lakhs. This provided employment to more than 30 women in the self-help group, strengthening their livelihoods.
Pahadi Cap – Weaving Cultural Threads:
Inspired by the directive of the District Project Manager Kailash Chandra Bhatt, women in Sahaspur Block took up the challenge to create a unique cultural artifact, the Pahadi Cap. With initial support and guidance from the Vriddhi Project under REAP Dehradun, the women successfully completed an order for 7000 Pahadi caps, with a total turnover of more than Rs 9 lakhs. The success story continues as an additional order of caps is underway, showcasing the dedication and skills of these women.
Empowering Through Enterprise:
Both these initiatives underscore the commitment of REAP Dehradun to empowering rural women through skill development, market access, and sustainable livelihoods. The integrated success of Miniature Handicrafts and Pahadi Cap enterprises not only provides economic independence to the women involved but also contributes to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand.
REAP Dehradun remains dedicated to expanding these ventures, bringing more women into the fold, and creating a positive impact on the rural landscape.
