A feud between an ex-BJP MLA and a person who claims to be his wife has revived the controversy over why Ankita Bhandari was murdered. The ‘wife’ has indirectly named a senior BJP functionary as the VIP for whose benefit Ankita was being pressured. This is only part of a series of allegations targeting her purported husband and, therefore, raises questions about intent. The big question is why she sat all this while on information that was crucial regarding the murder investigation. The suppression of such ‘facts’ would make her complicit in the crime. If it is just politics and hearsay, it is dangerous misuse of a young woman’s tragic death for personal reasons.

Whatever the truth may be, the ruling party in Uttarakhand should ensure this blot upon its reputation is cleared as soon as possible, particularly if it is not true. The opposition in the state, which not just includes political parties, but also certain social organisations, has been quick to pick up on the allegation and is demanding a CBI inquiry into the matter. If the government accedes to this demand, it will send the message that it is just as interested in discovering the truth, even if it requires putting one of its own in the headlights.

Of course, the opposition will be required to accept the results of the CBI investigation and the future plea should not be that all such investigative agencies are under the control of the government. All of those so strongly agitating on this issue should also be asked to present whatever proof or information they have on the allegations being made. In case it turns out that the Ankita case is being exploited for personal reasons, the necessary action should be taken against that person as an example for others in the future.

The opposition should also carefully examine its motives behind the present demands. Is it just eagerness to score points against the government irrespective of the real circumstances, or is it a genuine demand for justice in Ankita’s case? It must not be forgotten that those who killed her have been convicted and they could have negotiated a better deal if they had revealed who was behind the alleged demands placed upon her. This did not happen. The general public should also carefully examine the truth behind the ongoing agitation. This, however, is only possible if the government displays a positive attitude and orders a CBI investigation.
