Dehradun, 19 Aug: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today strongly condemned the ruckus and vandalism by Congress legislators in the Uttarakhand Assembly, describing it as shameful and unfortunate at a time when the State is grappling with disaster.
Speaking to the media persons at the BJP State Headquarters todayh, State BJP spokesperson Suresh Joshi said that instead of engaging in unruly behaviour, the Congress should have extended support to the victims. He observed that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is the first Chief Minister in the country to camp at ground zero for 3 consecutive days to assess the situation. The CM has already held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding compensation and rehabilitation. Joshi added that the BJP State Government is providing the best possible relief to the affected, just as it did during rescue operations. But the Opposition is adopting an insensitive, irresponsible, and self-serving attitude.
Answering questions from the press at the party headquarters, Joshi asserted that while it is a democratic right of any political party to put forth its views on constitutional matters in the House, no member has the right to damage government property or use indecent language. Such conduct is irresponsible and cannot be condemned enough. The entire State is witness to how the Congress is attempting to create an atmosphere of anarchy, he remarked.
Terming the behaviour of Congress MLAs as highly unfortunate, the BJP leader claimed that, instead of showing sympathy with those suffering from the disaster, the Opposition had taken an unconstitutional stand. He added that it has become evident once again that the government, which reached Gairsain to heal the wounds of the people, is serious about public interest, while the Congress has little concern for issues of the people and remains confined to its selfish agenda.
On the issue of relief and compensation, Joshi stated that the government is assessing the total losses suffered by the State. The CM and the PM have already held talks in this regard. The government has assured that all losses, personal, governmental, or social, will be compensated. Relief is being provided for loss of life, injuries, damaged houses and agricultural land. He asserted that he can say with certainty that this is the maximum disaster assistance provided in the last 25 years.
Joshi further observed that any shortcomings in relief distribution are being immediately addressed. Clear directions have been issued to ensure that no one faces discrimination and that grievances are resolved promptly. The clearest proof of the government’s seriousness is that when the disaster struck Dharali in Uttarkashi, the CM himself camped there for 3 days, becoming the first Chief Minister in the country to stay at a disaster site for such a duration. Having assessed the ground reality himself, there should be no doubt regarding the sincerity of compensation and rehabilitation efforts.
