Three dead, 5 injured as car falls into gorge in Rudraprayag

RUDRAPRAYAG, 30 May: A tragic road accident occurred in the Ukhimath police station area of Rudraprayag district on Saturday afternoon, leaving three people dead and five injured. The incident occurred around 12.15 pm on the Bhiri-Peling motor road when a vehicle lost control and plunged nearly 50 feet into a deep gorge, getting stuck against a tree.
On receiving information, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rudraprayag Vikas Pundir led teams from Ukhimath police, SDRF and DDRF to the site. Rescue operations were launched immediately with the help of local villagers, and those trapped inside the vehicle were pulled out and rushed to the Community Health Centre at Agastyamuni for treatment.
The police said that the car, bearing registration number UK13B-4293 (Celerio), was travelling from Banswada towards Peling-Uthind village. The injured were identified as Reshma Devi, Dakshit (5), Saanvi (3), Vihaan (8) and Vaibhav (10). All are under medical supervision. The deceased were identified as Mahendra Singh (68), his son Anjan Singh (42) and Sangeeta Devi (32), all residents of Uthind village. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
According to SDRF, a separate alert was received by its Agastyamuni post from DCR Rudraprayag about a vehicle accident on Pali Link Road. An SDRF team led by Sub-Inspector Dharmendra Pawar reached the site with rescue equipment and found that an Alto K10 car carrying eight passengers had fallen into a gorge. In challenging conditions, the team rescued five injured persons and sent them to the district hospital, while three were found dead at the spot. The bodies were recovered and handed over to the police for necessary formalities.
The accident has cast a pall of grief across the region, with residents mourning the loss of lives. Police said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
