DEHRADUN, 22 Mar: A significant programme was organised to mark World Water Day 2025 by the Uttarakhand State Council of Science and Technology (UCOST) in collaboration with Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan here on Saturday. The event witnessed discussions by experts on glacier conservation, water quality, and related technical fields, focusing on future prospects and innovative approaches in water resource management.

Chief Guest DP Uniyal, Joint Director of UCOST, underscored the importance of water quality and glacier conservation, highlighting the need for new research initiatives to address the water crisis. He called for exploring innovative methods to safeguard glaciers and water resources. MS Rawat, Scientific Officer at UCOST, emphasised the role of remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology in monitoring water quality and addressing water scarcity in the state’s rivers, Naulas, and Dharas. He said such advanced techniques could be instrumental in resolving challenges in the water sector.

Chief Chemist of Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan, Vikas Kandari, discussed emerging technologies for water quality assessment and conservation. He stressed the importance of adopting advanced testing methods and technological approaches to preserve the purity of water sources in Uttarakhand. Experts Vikas Nautiyal and Archit Pandey highlighted the necessity of collective efforts to conserve water and enhance water quality, calling for collaboration across sectors.

The event also marked the conclusion of a three-day state level water quality training workshop. Participants gained insights into the certification process of the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. Discussions included microbiological aspects of water quality in Uttarakhand. Chemists from the Project Management Unit and sub regional water quality laboratories representing all 26 districts attended the workshop.

The programme was attended by scientists, UCOST employees, and environmental enthusiasts, who pledged to raise awareness about water conservation. Their collective commitment emphasised the importance of sustainable water management and glacier preservation for the state’s future.
