Dehradun, 26 Mar: Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd), who is also the Chancellor, participated as the Chief Guest at the Seventh Convocation of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun, on Wednesday. On this occasion, he conferred degrees upon the students and extended his best wishes for their bright future. He congratulated the parents and teachers, calling it a proud moment for the entire university community.

The Governor awarded gold medals to students who excelled in their academic performance, expressing delight that a majority of the medal recipients were female students. He praised the increasing participation of women in various fields, calling it a significant societal transformation and a strong example of women’s empowerment. He emphasised that women are playing an essential role in nation-building and contributing to progress and development.

Encouraging students to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals, the Governor reminded them that as they step into the medical field, they are not just doctors, nurses, paramedics, or healthcare specialists, but important pillars of society. He stated that the medical profession is not merely a means of livelihood but a noble responsibility to heal the sick, reduce suffering, and contribute to the well-being of society. He urged them to uphold compassion, service, and integrity in their profession. He also reminded them that every patient is not just a medical case but a human being struggling between fear and hope, requiring both medical treatment and emotional support.

The Governor spoke about global health challenges and the increasing need for dedicated and skilled healthcare professionals. He encouraged students to stay updated with the latest medical advancements and technologies, emphasising that artificial intelligence and robotics are revolutionising healthcare by making medical procedures more accurate and efficient.

He also highlighted the Uttarakhand government’s efforts in improving medical education and healthcare facilities, stating the government is working on increasing medical seats and establishing new medical colleges. In the next 1.5–2 years, new medical colleges in Pithoragarh and Rudrapur will bring the total number of government medical colleges to eight, increasing MBBS seats to over 1,000. The state currently has 98 nursing colleges and over 100 paramedical colleges. Plans are in place to recruit 450 new doctors soon.
