Dehradun, 27 Jun: “Uttarakhand is nowadays facing deficiency of water, though Uttarakhand is the water tower of the world. Dehradun alone has nearly hundreds of villages in the name of water, e.g. Karwapani, Nalapani, Jharipani, Guchupani, etc.  Even the roads are in the name of canals, e.g. East Canal Road, West Canal Road, Rajpur Canal Road, Bijapur Canal Road, etc.,” says Padma Shri awardee Avdhash Kaushal.
Even then, because of mismanagement, people are facing acute shortage of water, he laments. All these canals, which are now in the name of roads, were being used by the citizens free of cost for their daily needs, like washing clothes, cleaning utensils, bathing as well as irrigation. Even the animals drank this water. Unfortunately, the state government covered these canals, resulting in shortage of water.
“This crisis of water is neither man-made nor natural,” adds Kaushal. The water supply to the politicians as well as bureaucrats is continuous, they don’t even pay water tax or water charge which amounts to crores of rupees. He urges all the citizens of Dehradun to unite and oppose the government for its misplaced priorities.
