Woman ASI run over by bus in Doon, dies on spot

Dehradun, 20 Jul: A lady Assistant Sub Inspector posted in Barkot in Uttarkashi and riding her scooty in Dehradun died today, when her vehicle was hit and crushed by a private Volvo bus at Ajabpur Flyover while her co rider and a Constable with Uttarakhand Police was injured in the accident. Sources claim that the driver has been arrested and is being interrogated by Nehru Colony Police Station. Assistant Sub Inspector Kanta Thapa, who died in the accident was on her way to Haridwar for Kanwar duty.

According to the information, ASI inspector Kanta Thapa posted in Uttarkashi Badkot police station was going from Dehradun to Haridwar on a scooty along with her colleague constable Shakuntala. On Ajabpur Flyover, a speeding private Volvo bus coming from behind hit the police personnel riding the scooty, due to which the female inspector came under the rear tyre of the bus. In this accident, ASI Kanta Thapa died on the spot, while her colleague Constable Shakuntala was badly injured. She has been taken to the nearby Kanishka Hospital by the local police for treatment. Later SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh visited her and assured of all possible help.

There is some confusion whether the driver of the Volvo bus involved in the accident has been arrested or not. Sources claim that initially the Nehru Colony Police Station officials claimed that the whereabouts of the Volvo driver who drove the bus recklessly at high speed are still unknown. However, some other sources claimed that he has been arrested and is being interrogated at Nehru Colony Police Station. The police have taken this Volvo bus bearing registration number UK07 PA 6999 under its possession. SI Mohan Singh however did not reveal the name of the driver involved but added that the Police are preparing to register the case and take further course of action.

According to the police, information was received today through the city control room that the policewomen riding a scooty had met with an accident on the Ajabpur flyover. As soon as the information was received, the Nehru Colony police station immediately reached the spot, and on inquiring about the incident on the spot, it was found that ASI Kanta Thapa posted in Barkot Uttarkashi police station and constable Shakuntala posted in Dehradun’s Cantt police station, who were on their way from Dehradun to Haridwar on a scooty for Kanwar Mela duty when they met with the accident.  The Volvo bus belonging to a private travel agency from Dehradun hit the scooty from behind. Eyewitnesses claim that the driver was driving the bus carelessly and was also speeding. Kanta Thapa came under the rear tyre of the bus and was killed on the spot.

Kanta Thapa is wife of late Brijmohan and permanent resident of Vasundhara Vihar, Thana Mukhani, District Nainital. Aged 58 years, she was currently living in residential complex of Cantt Police Station here. Constable Shakuntala also got injured in the accident, and was admitted to Kanishka Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased Kanta Thapa has been sent to Coronation Hospital for post-mortem. The injured female constable Shakuntala is undergoing treatment at Kanishka Hospital. Doctors have apprehended a possibility of fracture in her right hand. SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh paid a visit to her at Kanishka Hospital and he also spoke to the doctors treating her and sought details from them about the condition of Shakuntala. Singh also met the injured constable and assured her and her family of all possible help for better treatment. Shakuntala is posted in Dehradun Cantt Police Station.
