Dehradun, 21 Jul: In the last five years, police in Uttarakhand have found 318 dead bodies of women. Shockingly, out of these, 231 bodies are still unidentified. These women have no name, no address, and no known relatives. They were found dead, and no one came to claim them, police said.

According to the information provided, every year many bodies are recovered by the police. But when it comes to unclaimed bodies of women, the matter becomes more serious. Police records show that only 87 women were identified. The rest of the cases have gone cold. Their files are now lying closed in the police stations.

Criminal lawyer Rajat Dua says that without knowing who the victim is, the legal process remains incomplete. FIRs may be filed, but proper investigation becomes difficult.

Social worker Ramendri Mandrawal said that every woman’s death has a story. She believes that all these cases should be re-investigated. According to her, some of these women might have been victims of violence, abuse, or even trafficking.

Police officials say they are working on a DNA banking project. This will help in identifying bodies in the future. Uttarakhand Police spokesperson Nilesh Anand Bharne said that the plan is to make identification easier in the coming time.

But the big question still remains – what about the 231 nameless women from the past? Who were they? Where did they come from? How did they die?

This is no longer just a question of identity. It is a reflection of a system that failed to protect and to provide justice. Until these questions are answered, each unknown woman’s body remains a haunting reminder of that failure.
