6 killed in Chamoli landslides



Gopeshwar, 12 Aug: A cloudburst in Chamoli District’s Ghat Block devastated three villages in the area with landslides taking six lives, today. The first incident took place in Banjbagad Village at 5 a.m. The house of Abbal Singh was covered by the landslide, resulting in the death of his wife, Rupa and nine month old daughter Rupa.
In the second incident, Nenu Ram’s house was hit in Aali Village. His daughter Naurati (21) was killed. In the third incident, Shankar Lal’s house was hit, leading to the deaths of one Ajay (23), Anjali (8) and Aarti (7). The bodies of all the deceased have been recovered.
Houses and shops along a seasonal rivulet also collapsed.
Chief Minister TS Rawat has expressed grief at the loss of life. He ordered the district administration to provide whatever assistance required. The SDRF, Revenue and Disaster Management teams were involved in the rescue operations. Relief material has also been sent to the affected areas.
