CGLA celebrates Librarians’ Day at IMA

Dehradun, 12 Aug: The Central Government Library Association celebrated Librarians’ Day on the occasion of Padma Shri awardee Dr SR Ranganathan’s 127th Birth Anniversary, today, at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), here.
The Librarian’s Day function was inaugurated by Brig BS Ghorpade, Head of Academic Department, Indian Military Academy, as the Chief Guest. The event was compered by DK Pandey.
After lighting of the ceremonial lamp and Saraswati Vandana, a photo of Dr Ranganathan was garlanded and floral tributes were paid. Manish Sharma, Incharge, Central Library, IMA, welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, keynote speaker, President and General Secretary of CGLA and other members. He also presented a brief account of his library and its ongoing allied activities followed by a presentation on Dr Ranganathan.
Dr AK Suman, President, CGLA, spoke about the activities of Central Government Library Association and action being taken for the betterment of library professionals. He was confident that the lecture would help fulfill the dream of Dr SR Ranganathan by making available knowledge in the libraries to all users in the country at the right time, right place and to the right person. This could be done with the use of latest technology for management of library resources and improvement of library services. He emphasised the need for changes in library activities for development of libraries and its users in the present scenario after application of Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Dr BK Joshi, Director, Doon Library and Research Centre, threw light on the importance of books, how they are different from e-books or internet available material and resource sharing, and networking of libraries at the Dehradun level. He also urged library professionals to love their profession.
Keynote Speaker Ashish Kumar Bhuriya, Scientist ‘E’, IRDE, Dehradun, deliberated on the types of open source softwares, their merits and demerits and also on current trends in library and information service.
Chief Guest Brig BS Ghorpade highlighted the contribution of Dr SR Ranganathan in the field of Library Science. He emphasised the importance of networking and inter library loan, resource sharing of all the libraries of Dehradun with Army libraries. Information can be shared through e-mail, WhatsApp Group, etc., as the journals are getting costlier day by day. He suggested library professionals project their problems to the Government through CGLA Desk.
The 2019 CGLA Lifetime Outstanding Achievement Award in the field of Library & Information Science was given to KP Singh, ex-Librarian, Survey of India, Dehradun. The CGLA Newsletter was also released on theoccasion.
The event was compered by DK Pandey. Ram Niwas, General Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. Executive members RK Sood, KP Singh, JB Goyal, SK Bhandari, Sunita Aggrawal, Seema Khanna and others were also present.
