Dehradun, 22 Apr: The BJP has launched a sharp attack on the Congress over its declared protest outside the State Assembly on the issue of women’s reservation, alleging that the demonstration is an attempt to divert attention from what it termed as the party’s “anti-women” stance. State BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan alleged that the Congress, which opposed the Women’s Reservation Bill, is now resorting to “political theatrics” that would not be accepted by the women of the state. It may be recalled that the Congress dharna is slated to be held tomorrow outside the Vidhan Sabha Bhawan and will be led by PCC Chief Ganesh Godiyal.

Chauhan alleged that the Congress, after voting against women’s reservation in Parliament and even celebrating its failure, is now attempting to mislead the public through protests in the state. He maintained that the electorate is fully aware and capable of discerning such moves, adding that the party would face consequences for what he described as disrespect towards ‘half the population’. According to him, obstructing women’s rights has been a consistent pattern in the Congress’ political approach, and the current protest is misleading, baseless and aimed at salvaging its declining political credibility.

Chauhan further stated that the Congress had delayed the issue of women’s reservation for nearly 27 years and had once again attempted to derail the expectations raised by the Narendra Modi-led government in favour of women’s empowerment. Referring to the demand for a special session on the issue, Chauhan questioned the moral authority of Congress leaders in the state to raise such demands, asserting that the party and its allies had already revealed their “anti-women mindset” by opposing the Nari Shakti Vandan legislation in Parliament.

Chauhan also argued that there is no constitutional provision supporting the demands currently being raised by the Congress in this context. He claimed that despite being in power for decades, the Congress had failed to demonstrate the political will to grant women their due rights, whereas the present government is working towards implementing them on the ground. He accused the Congress of creating obstacles in this process through its actions.

The BJP leader expressed confidence that women in Uttarakhand are fully aware of the political intentions behind such protests and can distinguish between genuine efforts for their welfare and what he termed as opportunistic politics. He added that it would have been more appropriate for the state Congress leadership to engage constructively with its central leadership in favour of women’s rights and development rather than adopting what he described as negative political tactics.
