Letter to the Editor
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the immediate attention of the district administration and the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar toward the critical civic issues plaguing our city.
- Sluggish Progress of Deep Sewer Project: The sewer pipeline work has been dragging on for over a year, with barely 20–25% of the project completed so far.
- Dug-up Roads and Waterlogging: Roads across the city have been left dug up, turning into muddy hazards even after light showers, causing severe disruption to locals and pilgrims.
- Substandard Construction Quality: Caving roads and broken concrete slabs over drains have become dangerous death traps. Even newly built public amenities near the Ganga ghats are deteriorating prematurely, raising serious questions about accountability.
- Kumbh 2027 and Adhik Maas Concerns: Given the ongoing Adhik Maas footfall and the upcoming Kumbh Mela 2027, this slow pace and lack of preparation are deeply alarming for the reputation of this holy city.
- Sewer Overflow in Bhupatwala (Rani Gali): The situation in Rani Gali is utterly unliveable. Every downpour causes severe sewer overflow, forcing knee-deep sewage, filth, and human waste directly into residents’ homes, forcing families to stay awake all night to protect their belongings.
- Neglected Drains: The main drain passing through Rani Gali No. 4 has not been desilted for years, posing a massive threat of urban flooding and waterborne epidemics this monsoon.
I earnestly urge the District Magistrate and the Nagar Ayukt to step out for an immediate field inspection. The authorities must expedite the pending work on a war footing, ensure thorough desilting of drains, and hold the negligent contractors strictly accountable before the monsoon peaks. On behalf of the agonised and concerned citizens of Rani Gali, Bhupatwala, Haridwar.
Yours etc.,
Kartikeya
