Pithoragarh, 3 Jun: Under the theme of World Environment Day 2026, “Inspired by Nature, for the Climate, for Our Future”, 130 Infantry Battalion (TA) Eco Kumaon today successfully organised the Yakshvati River Rejuvenation Campaign and a massive tree plantation drive as part of World Environment Week events. Members of the armed forces, paramilitary forces, students, and local citizens enthusiastically participated in these events, expressing their commitment to environmental protection.

Jawans from 130 Infantry Battalion (TA) Eco Kumaon, 12 Kumaon, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), NCC cadets, and students from General BC Joshi Army Public School actively participated in the rejuvenation and cleanliness drive organised in the Rai Bagad area of the Yakshvati River. During the drive, the area was thoroughly cleaned, removing plastic, polythene, and other waste materials scattered along the river banks and streams. Participants were also made aware of the importance of water conservation and cleanliness.

The Yakshvati River is a vital lifeline for the city of Pithoragarh, providing drinking water to local citizens and military installations for years. Given the challenges the river faces due to increasing pollution and human interference, this campaign represents a significant initiative toward its conservation and revitalisation.

In a similar vein, a massive tree plantation drive was conducted in the Devkatiya area, led by the 130 Infantry Battalion (TA) Eco Kumaon, in collaboration with the 348 Medium Regiment and the 14th Battalion ITBP. During the drive, 1,000 saplings of various species were planted. This initiative is an important step towards increasing the green cover in the area, encouraging soil conservation, and strengthening local biodiversity.

Lt Col VS Danu, Assistant Commanding Officer, 130 Infantry Battalion (TA) Eco Kumaon, stated that the force is playing a leading role in environmental protection and afforestation efforts in the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand. The battalion regularly conducts tree planting, water source conservation, soil conservation, and environmental awareness programs. These activities, organised during World Environment Week, demonstrate the battalion’s continued commitment to environmental protection.

At the conclusion of the programme, all participants pledged to make environmental protection, water source cleanliness, and tree planting a mass movement. The enthusiastic participation of local citizens and students sent the message that only through collective efforts can the conservation of natural resources and sustainable development be ensured.

Through these campaigns, public awareness towards environmental protection in Pithoragarh has got a new direction and a strong foundation has been laid for the conservation of Yakshvati River and the green wealth of the area.
