New Delhi, 5 Aug: Uttarakhand has taken the lead in strengthening India–Nepal cooperation in global Sanskrit research. Sanskrit Education Secretary Deepak Kumar paid a courtesy call on Nepal’s Acting Ambassador Surendra Thapa at the Nepal Embassy in New Delhi, today, where both the sides underlined the growing global relevance of Sanskrit and stressed the need for deeper academic collaboration to accelerate the research, scholarship and educational opportunities.
Thapa praised India’s efforts for the promotion of Sanskrit and highlighted Nepal’s rich literary tradition, expressing confidence that academic cooperation and guidance from Indian scholars would give fresh impetus to Sanskrit education and research in Nepal. Kumar conveyed that Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh believes Sanskrit learning is simple and has emphasised its synergy with artificial intelligence (AI) to make pure pronunciation accessible. He said Uttarakhand is committed to playing a leading role in popularising Sanskrit globally.
He added that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has consistently supported the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit literature, with 13 Sanskrit villages established across the State. On Sanskrit Day, 28 August 2026, extensive programmes including seminars, lectures, cultural events and awareness campaigns will be held to highlight the timeless relevance of Sanskrit in modern society.
Kumar recalled the 19th World Sanskrit Conference hosted by Nepal in June 2025, which brought together eminent scholars and researchers worldwide, giving new direction to international cooperation in Sanskrit studies. He said the forthcoming memorandum of understanding between Uttarakhand Sanskrit University and Nepal Sanskrit University will open avenues for academic exchange, joint research and collaborative publications. He emphasised that Sanskrit forms the civilisational bond between India and Nepal, providing a shared intellectual and spiritual foundation for centuries.
