Dehradun, 6 Jun: Students of Kanya Gurukul in Dehradun staged a protest today against the reported move by Gurukul Kangri University management to shift four departments namely, Hindi, English, Sanskrit and History, from the Dehradun campus to the women’s campus in Haridwar. The students expressed strong opposition to what they have described as an attempt to shut down the Dehradun campus, which has been dedicated to women’s education for more than a century.
In a memorandum, the students alleged that the plan to vacate the Dehradun campus is a conspiracy to dismantle the institution and use the land for private gain. They said such a move would dishonour the legacy of their forebears and tarnish the reputation of Arya Samaj. The students emphasised that they had taken admission in Dehradun based on their circumstances and could not accept the shifting of the campus midway through their education.
The students also vowed to resist the decision at every level, stating they are prepared to approach the central government, move the courts, or launch an agitation if necessary. In the memorandum, they have asserted that they will not allow the Dehradun campus of Kanya Gurukul to be shifted to Haridwar.
The protest comes in the wake of remarks reportedly made by the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Pratibha Mehta Luthra during a visit to Dehradun on 30 May, when she indicated plans to relocate the campus. The students said they would continue their agitation until the decision is withdrawn. It may also be reminded here that Garhwal Post has carried a detailed report on the issue in its edition today, highlighting the growing discontent among students over the proposed relocation.
