Mussoorie, 11 Jun: Mussoorie is no longer defined solely by its beautiful valleys and tourism. Issues such as hours-long traffic jams, parking crises, and rising pollution during every tourist season have become major challenges for the city. In response, the administration has launched a new initiative to provide relief from congestion and pollution. On Thursday, a successful trial of e-rickshaws was conducted on Mussoorie’s steep inclines and busy routes, sparking new hope for the city’s future transport model.
In the presence of SDM Rahul Anand and officials from the Transport Department, the Municipality, and the Mussoorie Police, e-rickshaws from various companies were driven along routes spanning Kincraig to Mall Road, Company Garden, Picture Palace, and Kitabghar to test their capabilities. There had long been skepticism regarding the feasibility of operating e-rickshaws in a region like Mussoorie, characterised by difficult terrain and steep slopes; however, the trial dispelled most of these apprehensions.
During the trial, the e-rickshaws were driven on routes where even standard vehicles struggle to climb. Officials evaluated parameters such as battery capacity, braking systems, manoeuvrability on turns, and overall performance while carrying passengers. The e-rickshaws performed impressively and demonstrated the capability for safe operation.
SDM Rahul Anand stated that serious work is underway to establish an e-rickshaw-based shuttle service as a permanent solution to Mussoorie’s traffic congestion. He noted that vehicles from different companies were tested with encouraging results, and regulations and standards for their operation are now being formulated.
Sarandas, a representative from Mahindra who participated in the trial, stated that these modern e-rickshaws have been developed specifically with challenging geographical conditions in mind. He remarked that the successful trial in a hilly region like Mussoorie proves that e-rickshaws could become a vital component of the local public transport system in the future. He stated that e-rickshaws are not only a low-cost mode of transport but will also lead to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and pollution. He believes they could prove to be an ideal option for tourist towns.
During the tourist season in Mussoorie, long queues of vehicles often form along the Mall Road, Library Chowk, Picture Palace, and Company Garden routes. Tourists frequently take hours to travel from parking areas to their destinations. ARTO Charu Pant Mishra noted that the introduction of e-rickshaw services would provide tourists and locals with an affordable, safe, and eco-friendly transport option, while also easing the pressure of private vehicles in the city.
According to the administration’s preliminary plan, e-rickshaw services could operate on routes such as Shuttle Parking to Mall Road, Mall Road to Company Garden, and Kincraig to Picture Palace and Kitabghar. If the plan succeeds, other routes could be included in the future.
Environmentalists believe that launching an e-rickshaw-based shuttle service would not merely be an initiative to improve traffic flow but a major step towards a ‘Green Mussoorie’. A reduction in the number of diesel and petrol vehicles would lower carbon emissions and promote environmental conservation. Following a successful trial, the administration, the Transport Department, and the municipality are now focused on the next phase of the plan. If everything proceeds as intended, Mussoorie could soon be known not for traffic jams, but for a smart and eco-friendly transport system.
