Mussoorie, 25 Jun: The administration and the Public Works Department (PWD) have taken a significant step toward resolving the long-standing issue of illegal parking in Mussoorie.
Work has commenced on installing a divider along the centre of the busy Motilal Nehru Marg to curb the unauthorised roadside parking of vehicles. Locals have breathed a sigh of relief and welcomed this initiative. Residents state that Motilal Nehru Marg had been grappling with illegal parking problems for years. The road often narrowed due to taxis and other commercial vehicles parked along the sides, leading to persistent traffic jams throughout the day—a situation that worsened significantly during the tourist season. According to locals, large numbers of vehicles would remain parked on the roadside for hours, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to pedestrians and schoolchildren. People noted that despite repeated administrative actions, there was no permanent improvement in the situation; consequently, the decision to install a central divider is viewed as an effective, long-term solution. The primary objective of the PWD’s divider installation is to prevent roadside illegal parking and streamline traffic flow. It is expected that the divider will make it difficult for drivers to park haphazardly, thereby ensuring smoother traffic movement. Local traders and residents believe this will reduce daily traffic congestion and save time for commuters.
According to sources, the work is being carried out in phases. The plan involves installing a divider along the centre of the road from Library Chowk to Mussoorie Modern School. If fully implemented, this measure could largely eliminate the problem of illegal parking along this entire stretch. Local residents have appreciated the move by the administration and the Public Works Department to install dividers. They note that, after a long time, a concrete step has been taken to improve the traffic system. People believe that if traffic rules are strictly enforced alongside this measure and regular action is taken against illegal parking, significant improvements could be seen in Mussoorie’s traffic situation.
