Dehradun, 22 Jul: The Uttarakhand government is preparing to set up a Sanskrit Commission which would be aimed at the preservation, promotion and contemporary application of the Sanskrit language. To ensure the commission’s scope is comprehensive and effective, suggestions have been invited from Sanskrit scholars, teachers, researchers, universities, gurukuls, institutions and Sanskrit enthusiasts from across the country. The government has stated that interested people and organisations may submit their inputs by e‑mail till 10 August 2026.
Sanskrit Education Secretary Deepak Kumar reminded that Uttarakhand had taken a pioneering step in 2010 by granting Sanskrit the status of the state’s second official language. He also reminded that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, while addressing the International Sanskrit Conference held in Haridwar in December 2025, had emphasised the need for a high‑level Sanskrit Commission to safeguard the language and ensure its effective implementation. Following this, a high‑level meeting was held at the Secretariat on 15 July 2026 which advanced the process of establishing the commission.
Commenting on the developments, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami observed that the proposed body would focus on Sanskrit education, research, preservation and digitisation of ancient manuscripts, promotion of Indian knowledge traditions, Vedic and classical studies, Sanskrit‑based skill development and employment, and the use of Sanskrit in administration and technology. It would also explore the potential of Sanskrit in artificial intelligence and digital platforms. The commission is expected to play a crucial role in framing long‑term policies and action plans for the propagation of Sanskrit.
He further observed that Uttarakhand, known as Devbhoomi, derives its identity from a rich cultural and spiritual heritage in which Sanskrit holds a special place. More than a language, Sanskrit is regarded as the foundation of India’s knowledge traditions and cultural legacy.
