Haridwar, 27 Aug: A new initiative is underway in Haridwar district to promote Basmati rice cultivation with the aim of increasing farmers’ incomes and developing better market linkages, including potential export opportunities.

Under a pilot project led through the district administration, farmers from Bhagwanpur and Bahadrabad blocks are being encouraged to cultivate Pusa Basmati, with cultivation planned across nearly 40 hectares.

In the initial phase, 87 farmers were linked with the initiative and provided quality seeds free of cost through the district agriculture programme. Following cultivation, efforts will focus on improving market access and connecting farmers with larger markets, with support from the Rural Enterprise Acceleration Project (REAP).

According to Chief Development Officer Dr Lalit Narayan Mishra, the initiative aims to improve the quality and market value of Basmati production while creating better income opportunities for farmers.

Chief Agriculture Officer Gopal Singh Bhandari stated that the objective is not limited to exports. Strengthening the local market for Basmati is also an important component, as increased local production can improve availability and reduce farmers’ dependence on distant markets.

The pilot also focuses on quality production, appropriate seed selection, organic inputs and adherence to prescribed production and safety standards. The Agriculture Department is monitoring the crop and providing technical guidance to participating farmers.

The initiative is expected to create a pathway from farmer to market and, eventually, international markets, while exploring the potential for expanding Basmati cultivation to other areas of the district.

REAP’s role in strengthening market linkages and supporting rural enterprises can further help farmers move beyond production towards value creation and better market opportunities.
