DEHRADUN, 10 Jan: In Dehradun, pet owners and animal lovers are very worried about the challenges animals face during the cold winter months. Many feel it is their duty to keep their animals safe from the cold. Some people take extra steps, like setting up warm, insulated shelters. For example, pet owners often talk about keeping their cats and dogs indoors more often or making cozy areas with blankets. One local farmer shared, “We’ve added extra bedding and windproofing in our barn to keep our cows safe from frostbite.”

Some people also mention how feeding and watering animals is harder in winter. Water and food can freeze easily in outdoor containers. “It’s hard, especially with water. You have to keep breaking the ice or find ways to keep it warm,” said a horse owner, explaining the effort needed to keep animals well-fed and hydrated in the cold.

Many residents are also aware of the breathing problems cold, dry air can cause. One person who owns short-nosed dog breeds said, “My pets have trouble breathing in winter, so we use a humidifier, and it really helps.” Others suggest keeping barns ventilated but without strong drafts to help livestock breathe more comfortably.

Mostly people know that animals need mental and physical activity even in winter. Pet owners talk about giving pets toys to play with indoors and creating safe areas for them to move around. Farmers also mention clearing paths so livestock can walk safely and stay active. As one resident said, “Winter is tough, but making small changes like these really helps our animals stay healthy and happy.
