DEHRADUN, 24 Jan: On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) emphasized that in future, the revolution of change will be led by women and girls, who are ready to take on leadership roles in every field. He highlighted that girls today are playing leading roles in various sectors. Through Self-Help Groups, women are contributing significantly to the state’s economy. He urged girls to embrace technology to further their growth. Speaking at a special programme was held at Raj Bhawan where Governor participated as Chief Guest and honoured the girls who secured the highest marks in the High School and Intermediate examinations in recognition of their outstanding performance in 2024.

Students, Priyanshi Rawat from High School, Kumari Sakshi from the Arts stream, Kanchan Joshi from the Science stream, and Tamanna Panwar from the Commerce stream were awarded prize money of ₹50,000 each. The girls from Shri Guru Ram Rai Inter College, Sahaspur, performed a play based on the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” campaign. Students from Himjyoti School presented a vibrant cultural programme.
The Governor also pointed out that in university convocation ceremonies, the number of girls receiving degrees and awards often exceeds that of boys, marking a positive shift. He emphasized that National Girl Child Day is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to empowering girls and to strengthen ongoing efforts for their betterment. The day aims to raise awareness about the rights of girls, their education, health, and nutrition.
Additionally, Uttar Pradesh Foundation Day was celebrated during the programme. The Governor remarked that Uttar Pradesh is a unique state of India, owing to its distinctive contributions and characteristics. He noted that it is the most populous state in the country and has the highest number of districts. Uttar Pradesh is a major tourist destination due to its rich and diverse geography, vibrant culture, festivals, monuments, and ancient religious sites.
He appreciated Uttar Pradesh’s contribution to Hindi literature and arts, highlighting that the state has played a vital role in the development of Hindi literature. He also praised the state’s leadership in the fields of literature and arts, contributing immensely to India’s cultural heritage. The Governor commended the “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” initiative, emphasizing its role in strengthening national unity and celebrating diversity. He viewed such events as powerful tools to promote our cultural richness and national unity.
The event was attended by the First Lady Gurmeet Kaur, DGP Deepam Seth, Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman, Legal Advisor to the Governor Amit Kumar Sirohi, Additional Secretaries Swati S Bhadoria and Ranjana Rajguru, along with other Uttar Pradesh officials working in Uttarakhand.
