Dehradun, 2 May: The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh warning of heavy rain across Uttarakhand for the next five days, raising concerns over possible disruptions in the plains and hill districts. Today, several parts of Dehradun, Haridwar, and nearby areas, and also some districts in Kumaon region, witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic slowdowns.

As per the forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre, Dehradun, an Orange Alert has been declared for Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts for 2 May, while Yellow Alerts have been issued for the rest of the districts. For 3 May, an Orange Alert has been sounded for the entire state, including Garhwal and Kumaon regions, due to the likelihood of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Officials have warned that 3, 4, and 5 May are likely to see widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and possible hailstorms in some pockets. The weather department has advised extra caution, especially for Char Dham pilgrims, as landslides and slippery routes could pose a threat in higher altitudes. Rain activity is expected to ease slightly by 6 May, for which a Yellow Alert has been issued. However, isolated spells of rain may continue.

Last evening, the Berinag area in Pithoragarh district witnessed hailstorms and torrential rain, causing flood-like situations in several villages. Fortunately, no loss of life or major property damage was reported. However, the unseasonal downpour brought misery to farmers, as standing crops in the fields were severely damaged due to rain and hail.

Meanwhile, today’s rain in Dehradun and Haridwar caused temporary power outages and disrupted daily life, as schools and offices struggled with sudden downpours. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and keep emergency numbers handy.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration have been put on standby to deal with any emergent situation in vulnerable areas.
