Haridwar, 15 Jul: Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) extended a warm welcome to Kanwar pilgrims arriving in Haridwar by offering them rudraksha malas and shawls, symbolising blessings and appreciation for their devotion.

In his message to the pilgrims, the Governor appealed: “Do not carry Kanwars heavier than your physical capacity.” He urged everyone to follow the rules laid down by ancient sages for this spiritual journey. He emphasised that the Kanwar Yatra is not just a religious event, but a sacred tradition deeply rooted in discipline and devotion.

Earlier, the Governor held a detailed meeting at Damkothi with district administration officials to review the preparations, logistics, and challenges related to the Kanwar Yatra. He praised the efforts of the Haridwar administration, saying that serving Kanwar pilgrims is a divine opportunity. The number of devotees expected during the 13-day Yatra surpasses the population of many countries.

He suggested the publication of a Coffee Table Book on Kanwar Yatra 2025, documenting preparations, challenges, the spirit of faith, and other key aspects. The Governor reflected, “Every pilgrimage carries memories, emotions, and inspiration. Let every pilgrim leave Devbhoomi with positive experiences and memories.”

He added, “Those who move towards solutions find that the solutions begin to move toward them. Even complex challenges often have simple answers.”

During the meeting, discussions were held on enhancing traffic management, healthcare facilities, and overall pilgrim services. District Magistrate Mayur Dixit, SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal, SP Jitendra Mehra, and other officials shared their experiences, insights, and logistical plans. ASP Jitendra Chaudhary gave a detailed PowerPoint presentation covering the Kanwar route plan and the services arranged for devotees.

The Governor also honoured and encouraged cook Suresh Rawat, who is serving diligently at Damkothi.

In a press briefing, the Governor stated, “It is a matter of great pride for every Uttarakhandi to welcome Kanwar pilgrims during the holy month of Sawan. Their devotion, discipline, and dedication set a high standard.” He noted that the results of the government and administration’s planning are clearly visible in the smooth conduct of the Yatra.

He remarked on the challenge of managing an influx of crores of pilgrims in a short span, recalling that over 4 crore devotees had participated in the previous year’s Yatra. Yet, he emphasised, “More than a challenge, it is a blessing to serve the devotees of Lord Shiva.”

Describing the spirit of the pilgrims, he said, “Even after walking for days since July 11, carrying heavy Kanwars, their faces showed no sign of fatigue – only determination. Their energy and faith are inspiring.”

He added that being in Haridwar and Uttarakhand brings a divine sense of sanctity and purity, and applauded the excellent coordination among government, police, and community volunteers.

He concluded by noting that the 2025 Yatra serves as a trial run for the 2027 Kumbh Mela and shared that over 40 lakh pilgrims have already completed the Char Dham Yatra this season.

Present at the meeting were District Magistrate Mayur Dixit, SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal, SP-City Pankaj Gairola, SP, Crime & Traffic, Jitendra Mehra, SP, Communications, Vipin Kumar, ASP Jitendra Chaudhary, SP Niharika Tomar, Additional District Magistrate PR Chauhan, City Magistrate Kusum Chauhan, HRDA Secretary Manish Singh, and other senior officials.
