46th Annual Meet of IIG begins today at HNB Garhwal University

Srinagar Garhwal, 24 Oct: The Department of Geography at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University is set to organise the 46th Annual Meet of the Institute of Indian Geographers (IIG) and the International Conference on the theme, “Dynamic Earth, Fragile Environment and Path to Climate-Resilient Society”, starting tomorrow. In this conference, geographers and research scholars from different renowned Institutes of India and abroad will present their research papers.

Addressing the media on Friday, Head of the Geography Department and Convenor of the Conference, Prof Mohan Singh Panwar stated that the three-day international conference will be inaugurated on Saturday at Swami Manmathan Auditorium located at the Chauras Campus of Garhwal University. He informed the press that the conference will be inaugurated in the presence of Cabinet Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat as the Chief Guest and noted environmentalist, Padma Shri awardee, and founder of HESCO Dehradun, Dr Anil Prakash Joshi, as the Special Guest. He shared that the conference would focus on discussions related to Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development. Deliberations will take place on the dynamics of the earth system, ecological instability, climate justice, and strategies for building a resilient society. The deteriorating geographical ecology and environment of Uttarakhand will also be a key topic of discussion. Senior professors of geography from various universities across the world including London School of Economics and Political Science and from various reputed Institutions across India will deliver lectures on 25 diverse themes, which will further enhance the global academic significance of the conference.

Prof Panwar stated that over 30 technical sessions will be organised during the three-day conference. These sessions will cover topics including Dynamic Earth Systems, Himalayan Glacier Changes, Desertification, Drought and Flood Studies, Fragile Environments, Mountain Ecosystems, Extreme Climate Events and Environmental Crises, Geo-informatics and Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Remote Sensing Applications, Climate Change and Justice, Global Policies, Equity and Sustainable Governance, Rural Development, Health and Population Dynamics, Urban and Transport Geography, Smart Cities, among others. He added that, at the concluding session of the conference on 27 October, academic recommendations and future action plans will be presented. These will be submitted before NITI Aayog (Government of India), the Uttarakhand Setu Commission, as well as legislators.

On this occasion, Prof Mahavir Singh Negi, Prof BP Naithani, Dr Rakesh Saini, Dr Dhiraj Kumar Sharma, Dr Ranjan Karmakar, Dr Narendra Kumar, Dr Hasibur Rahman, Geography faculties from SRT Campus, BGR Campus, and Dr Vijaykant Purohit, Public Relations Officer Ashutosh Bahuguna, Dr VS Negi, and others were also present.
