Dehradun, 6 Oct: In a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism and enhancing rural livelihoods, the Indian Army, under Operation Sadbhavana, inaugurated a tent-based homestay in the scenic border village of Garbyang today. The project aligns with the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme and is aimed at bolstering tourism and fostering community development in remote areas of the Kumaon region.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Lieutenant General DG Misra, General Officer Commanding, Uttar Bharat Area. The initiative marks a new chapter in eco-tourism by offering travellers an immersive cultural experience while contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of border communities.
Garbyang, often referred to as the Gateway to Shivnagri Gunji, holds strategic and spiritual significance. It serves as a critical junction for two major pilgrimage routes – towards Adi Kailash and Om Parvat-Kalapani – attracting both spiritual seekers and adventure tourists. Its pristine natural beauty and rich cultural heritage make it an ideal location for sustainable tourism initiatives.
The launch event witnessed active participation from local villagers, who welcomed the initiative as a meaningful step towards livelihood generation and rural empowerment. The homestay will not only provide visitors with an authentic Kumaoni experience but also strengthen ties between the military and local communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Lieutenant General Misra said, “Under Operation Sadbhavana, we are striving for sustainable development in border villages. This project will not only promote tourism but also spur rural development, job creation, and reverse migration.”
In addition to the homestay, the Indian Army is undertaking several other developmental projects in the Kumaon border region, including the electrification of remote villages, installation of hybrid solar plants, medical outreach camps, and establishment of poly houses. These efforts aim to create self-reliant communities while promoting peace and stability in the border areas.
The Indian Army’s commitment to inclusive development through people-centric initiatives continues to play a vital role in transforming border villages into vibrant, self-sustaining communities.
