Dehradun, 31 Jan: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned remarks made by former Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Parliament, calling them an insult to the President. BJP State President and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt has demanded an immediate apology, stating that the President represents the pride of 125 crore Indians. He criticised the statement as reflecting the Congress party’s feudal, anti-poor, and anti-tribal mindset.

Bhatt termed Sonia Gandhi’s comments on President Droupadi Murmu’s speech on the first day of the budget session as an affront to the entire nation. He asserted that referring to the head of the Indian Republic as a “poor lady” is a blatant insult to women’s empowerment and the tribal community. The BJP leader demanded an unconditional apology from the Congress, condemning the remarks as unacceptable to every Indian.

He further stated that every BJP worker and resident of Uttarakhand strongly condemns the term “poor thing” allegedly used for the President. Bhatt accused the Congress leadership of deliberately using such language to demean not only the President but also women, the poor, and the tribal community.

Referring to the controversy, Bhatt said such statements from the former Congress President reflect a disregard for parliamentary traditions and discussions on nation-building. He emphasised that India, as the world’s largest democracy, respects its President as the first citizen, and someone who has risen through strength and perseverance from the tribal community, cannot be considered poor. He highlighted that the President is a symbol of resilience, not weakness, making the Congress party’s remarks completely inappropriate.

Taking a swipe at the Congress, Bhatt remarked that if anything is truly “poor,” it is the Congress party itself. He accused the party of dividing society and stalling national development, leading to repeated electoral defeats.
