DEHRADUN, 23 Aug: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed profound grief over the death of a young woman in Chamoli district’s Tharali area after a cloudburst late on Friday night caused her to be buried under the debris. He also wished for the safe and sound recovery of a person reported missing. Following the CM‘s directives, teams from the police, disaster management department, and district administration have reached the site and are engaged in rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile the state administration today stated that under the instructions of the CM, disaster relief work is progressing at a fast pace in the Tharali area. A joint rescue operation is being conducted by the district administration along with NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and SSB. The administration has also claimed that the injured have been shifted to a safe location.
It may be recalled that a cloudburst in the Toonri stream in the Tharali tehsil area late last night caused a massive flow of debris into the Tharali market and surrounding areas. Several houses, including the SDM’s residence, were damaged by the debris. Shops were filled with debris, while many vehicles were also buried. A DDRF team reached the spot as soon as they were informed and began rescue and relief work. Meanwhile, SDRF and NDRF teams have also been dispatched to the disaster-hit area. The Karnaprayag-Gwaldam road has been damaged in several places due to heavy rains, and efforts are underway to clear it on a priority basis.
Dhami also spoke to public representatives of Chamoli district over the phone to get detailed information about the damage caused by the cloudburst. Expressing deep sorrow over the disaster, he requested all public representatives to cooperate with the district administration in rescue and relief efforts. The CM also urged the local MLA to remain at the site and personally oversee the relief and rescue operations.
