Dehradun, 10 Nov: On the second day of the ongoing international conference at Graphic Era Deemed University, scientists emphasised the need to conduct research on increasing the capacity of alternative fuel production.
Eminent scientists from India and abroad addressed the ‘International Conference on IC Engines, Propulsion and Combustion’ held at the University today.
Presenting his paper at the conference, Prof Jiang Huangwei of National University of Singapore said that ammonia has emerged as an excellent source of renewable energy as an alternative fuel. Its combustion proves helpful in increasing the efficiency of boiler gas, turbine and IC engines. Prof Huangwei added that despite being a good source of energy, ammonia has some challenges such as low burning intensity, emission of polluting nitrogen and easy extinguishing. It is important to conduct research to deal with these challenges. He gave detailed information on the fuel prepared from a mixture of ammonia and hydrogen to make the combustion system carbon free.
Prof Ming Sun Wu of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, stressed the need to develop green propulsion technologies and said that a chemical called hydrazine is used as a propellant in rockets and spacecraft. This propellant not only pollutes the environment but also causes serious problems like cancer. He said that propellants like hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN), ammonia dinitramide and hydrogen peroxide will help in reducing pollution. He shared information on HAN propellant through slides.
Dr SR Chakravarti of IIT Madras spoke about the experiments conducted on unstable combustion process in swirl combustor.
As many as 70 research papers were presented and 12 technical sessions held at the conference today. Dr Jeevan Vachan Tirkey of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Dr P Aravindha Babu of Annamali University, Dr S Karmakar of IIT Kharagpur, Dr P Shanmugham of Council of Industrial and Scientific Research, Chennai, Dr Vijay Patidar and Dr Porpatham E of Vellore Institute of Technology, Bhopal, Dr Anuj Kumar Sharma of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Lucknow, Dr Jitendra Katiyar of Chitkara University, Chandigarh, Dr Sujeet Yadav of IIT Delhi, Dr Ashish Kumar of Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, Dr Gurunath, Dr Rajesh Yadav of GD Goenka, Dr Harshit Shukla and Shalini Pandey of UPES, Dehradun chaired these sessions.
The international conference was organised by Graphic Era Deemed University and Graphic Era Hill University in collaboration with The Combustion Institute – Indian Section. Along with scientists from India and abroad, the conference was attended by The Combustion Institute – Indian Section Secretary PK Pandey, HOD, Aerospace Engineering, Graphic Era, Dr Sudhir Joshi, Dr Pushpendra Kumar, Dr Puneet Gupta, Dr Manvendra Singh, Dr Gopal, teachers and students.
