US President Donald Trump’s arrogant and disrespectful address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday reflects not only his self-centric world view, but also a commitment to the MAGA ideology. He is intent not only on withdrawing the US from crucial global commitments such as combating climate change, humanitarian initiatives, and a scientific approach, he also wishes to persuade the United Nations to follow his diktat. He has decided on a bullying strategy that may or may not achieve his stated goals but will certainly alienate not just allies but also other powerful nations.
Of these, India and China are critical to how the world will answer this retrograde challenge. The Chinese ambassador to India has expressed the need to look beyond the territorial disputes between the two nations so that the enormous scope for economic cooperation may be tapped. It is good if China is thinking on these lines because all the tensions over the years have been caused by its provocations on the border. That the two countries have developed strong economic and social relations has been despite this obstacle. One can only imagine the levels to which cooperation can extend if this problem is overcome. Both nations have essentially self-reliant economies that can survive US ostracization. If they cooperate on a major scale, they can not only face US pressure but also provide support to the economies of the Third World. This would provide political muscle in dealing with the more developed countries, leading to greater peace and stability.
India is trying to diplomatically negotiate a rejig in relations with the US, but it should certainly explore the China option as back up. The multilateral approach traditionally adopted by India based on non-alignment has made it possible for it to transcend what would otherwise be considered inherently contradictory – such as being friends simultaneously with Israel and Palestine. It hopes to build better relations with China, even as it is a member of the Quad. Other nations facing similar dilemmas appreciate India’s approach, which has enormously increased its clout. It is also important that this diplomacy receives the support of the Indian people in terms of taking responsibility. The drivers of the Indian economy have not achieved anywhere the levels required. This potential must be achieved soon by adopting the necessary changes and innovative spirit. It must not be forgotten that even those who have chosen to live abroad need a powerful India to protect their interests and human dignity.
