Dehradun, 5 Feb: The Uttarayani Kaithik Mahotsav 2026, organised by the Seva Sankalp Foundation on the theme ‘Prosperity through Culture’, kicked off at the Parade Ground here today with traditional splendour. The Mahotsav was formally inaugurated by Seva Sankalp Foundation Convener and Founder Trustee and wife of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Geeta Dhami, marking the beginning of a multi-faceted celebration of Uttarakhand’s folk traditions, heritage and cultural ethos.

The opening of the festival was marked by the chanting of Vedic Swastivachan mantras and the resonant sound of conch shells, lending a deeply spiritual and cultural atmosphere to the venue. Organised in accordance with age-old rituals and customs, the Mahotsav aims to provide a vibrant and inclusive platform for showcasing the folk culture, traditions and rich heritage of Uttarakhand, while also reinforcing their relevance in contemporary society.

A grand Shobha Yatra and Kalash Yatra formed the centrepiece of the inaugural celebrations and offered a vivid display of the state’s diverse folk traditions. The procession was led by Geeta Dhami, who carried the ceremonial Kalash, symbolising cultural continuity and collective prosperity. Dressed in traditional attire and accompanied by folk musical instruments, the yatra commenced from Lansdowne Chowk and passed through Darshan Lal Chowk, Clock Tower, Gandhi Park and Kanak Chowk, before culminating at the Parade Ground. The entire route witnessed enthusiastic participation and warm receptions from local residents as the city transformed into a living canvas of culture and festivity.

The procession was led by a symbolic representation of Nyankari Goljyu, followed by captivating performances of Chholiya dance, Jaunsari dance and other similarly vibrant presentations of Gadhwali, Kumaoni, Gorkhali and Punjabi folk dances. The rhythmic beats of traditional instruments, coupled with energetic performances by folk artists, drew large crowds and held spectators spellbound. Thousands of participants joined the procession at various points, reflecting the strong public connect and widespread enthusiasm for the cultural celebration.

Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Geeta Dhami said that the Uttarayani Kaithik Mahotsav is a meaningful initiative aimed at preserving Uttarakhand’s rich cultural legacy and reconnecting the younger generation with its roots. She said that the theme ‘Prosperity through Culture’ conveys the message that social and economic progress can be achieved while safeguarding traditions and cultural values. She emphasised that culture forms the foundation of a society’s identity and sustainable development.

She further stated that the Mahotsav features a wide range of folk art forms, traditional cuisines, handicrafts, cultural performances and social activities, with participation from artists, artisans and cultural troupes from across the state. She said the objective of the festival is to provide renewed recognition to local culture and ensure that the folk traditions of Uttarakhand reach every section of society, thereby strengthening cultural pride while opening avenues for cultural and economic empowerment.
