Dehradun, 9 Sep: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the ‘Himalaya Bachao Abhiyan-2025’ programme organised by the newspaper, Hindustan, at a hotel on Mussoorie Road here today. During the programme, he also honoured individuals who have made commendable contributions in the field of Himalayan and environmental conservation.
Addressing the gathering, Dhami reminded that the ‘Himalaya Bachao Abhiyan’ was launched by the Hindustan newspaper in 2012 with the objective of making every citizen aware of the need to protect the Himalayas. He also observed that the campaign has now grown into a mass movement with people increasingly joining to protect the Himalayan ecosystem. Describing the Himalayas as a unique heritage of the nation’s soul, culture and nature, Dhami reminded that several life-giving rivers originate from the Himalayan region and provide drinking water to crores of people and are also a major source of energy generation. He added that the rare flora and fauna found in the Himalayan region are an equally important part of the environmental heritage.
The CM emphasised that along with development, maintaining an ecological balance is essential for the conservation of the Himalayas, and the state government is making sustained efforts in this regard. Climate change, he noted, has emerged as a major threat and, to counter it, the government is working to promote forest and water conservation as well as the use of clean energy sources in the Himalayan areas. Regular measures are being taken through tree plantation drives, water conservation campaigns and environmental awareness programmes.
Dhami further reminded that tourism is a major economic activity in the Himalayan belt and to promote sustainable tourism while also addressing plastic waste management, the state government has introduced a Digital Deposit Refund System. He claimed that through this initiative alone, it has been possible to reduce 72 tonnes of carbon emissions in the Himalayan region.
The CM Dhami also emphasised that greater efforts are needed to preserve the Himalayas, stressing that the knowledge, traditions and lifestyles of people residing in the region embody a natural harmony with the environment. He felt that the experiences of local people and their traditional wisdom, should be given adequate space in environmental protection policies. He stressed that only when every individual becomes conscious of Himalayan conservation and assumes responsibility will it be possible to secure this invaluable heritage for future generations.
