DEHRADUN, 28 Dec: District Magistrate and Municipal administrator Savin Bansal reviewed the city’s cleanliness system during a meeting at the Municipal Corporation office here on Saturday. The review focused on the garbage collection work of the previous month. The review revealed that the garbage collection companies had achieved only 70 to 80 per cent of the target. Expressing displeasure over the tardy progress, the DM directed the companies to achieve 100 per cent collection and ensure equipment and manpower deployment as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The District Magistrate warned the company officials of slapping legal and criminal action in cases of negligence or failure to meet cleaning standards. He also instructed the creation of a centralised dashboard system to monitor garbage collection and segregation.
In addition, the DM granted a conditional 15-day deadline to garbage collection companies Econ Waste Management Solutions Ltd and Sunlight, requiring written apologies and improved performance. He warned that in case the standards are still not met, the tender process will opt for new firms in their wards. A technology-driven tender process is already in progress for 47 wards. The DM emphasised that tenders with unrealistically low bids that compromise on quality would be cancelled.
Regarding the Sheeshambada plant, the DM noted that 6,740 disposals were recorded in December, with 500 tonnes of waste arriving daily and 800 tonness being processed daily. A penalty was imposed on the firm responsible for not meeting commitments. He also directed that the payment to the company be made based on actual work done. The company’s extended deadline ends on January 28, with monitoring through the PMC in place.
In addition, the DM also inspected garbage collection centres in Kargi and Dhora and criticised inefficiencies in public investment for projects worth crores. He called for seriousness among officials and urged them to return to their original departments if they failed to meet expectations. A meeting with the PIU was scheduled for a detailed review of ongoing projects.
During the review of streetlight maintenance, it was reported that 20 to 25 repair complaints were being registered on a daily basis, all of which were being resolved on the same day.
