Dr Mamta Joshi enthralls Doonites with Sufi music

DEHRADUN, 20 Sep: Dr Mamta Joshi, a renowned Sufi singer, performed for the students of BS Negi Women Polytechnic, ONGC Campus, here, today. During her performance, Dr Mamta set the mood with her renditions of Sufi poems by Sant Kabir and Meera Bai. She left the audience completely enthralled. Recipient of the ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar’ from Sangeet Natak Akademi, Dr Mamta Joshi is a disciple of the famous Wadali Brothers and is considered one of the finest female Sufi singers from among the younger generation. She has extensively performed in India and abroad. She says, “For me, Sufism is all about knowing myself. When I started my journey, learning about various Sufi mystics and popular poets, it was like a spiritual awakening and ever since I have only been a vessel to spread the message that our peers and faqirs communicated.” Dr Mamta had the passion for singing from the age of nine. She has won six gold medals in major singing competitions in India and has performed for the Prime Minister of India, Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana and at major festivals in Bollywood, Punjab and India.
