Dehradun, 16 Jul: Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal today extended his wishes to the people of Uttarakhand on the occasion of Harela festival. In a message issued for the people of the state, Uniyal described Harela as a living testament to the region’s rich folk traditions, ecological consciousness, and the far-sightedness of its ancestors. He emphasised that Harela is not merely a celebration, but a profound call to action for environmental stewardship rooted in Uttarakhand’s cultural identity.

Uniyal announced the Forest Department’s ambitious target of planting one crore saplings across the state to mark the festival. Drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national pledges for environmental preservation and a Green India, he stated that the campaign has been carefully aligned with the realities of climate change and evolving ecological demands. The forest minister asserted that the initiative aims not only at reforestation but also at laying the groundwork for long-term ecosystem rejuvenation.

Uniyal also observed that real accountability lies not in planting alone, but in nurturing each sapling until it flourishes as a tree. To strengthen oversight, the department has integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to monitor the survival and health of the plantations. Uniyal underscored that this approach would enhance transparency, accountability, and ensure that the drive translates into tangible environmental outcomes.

Calling upon the citizens, local bodies, voluntary organisations, and educational institutions to join in the initiative, the Forest Minister urged everyone concerned to treat this Harela as an opportunity for collective resolve, not just to plant trees but to protect them. He reiterated that safeguarding Uttarakhand’s natural legacy demands enduring commitment so that future generations inherit a green, balanced, and resilient environment.
