Dehradun, 1 Dec: The second session on the final day of the Crime Literature Festival of India focused on the evolving societal and legal responses to crimes against women, particularly the high-profile cases of Arushi Talwar and the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case.

The session featured notable figures such as IPS officer Meeran Chadha Borwankar, former CBI officer Arun Kumar, and DIG, Law & Order, P Renuka Devi, moderated by Supriya Chandhok. The panel examined the emotional and widespread impact of these cases, highlighting the media’s role in sensationalising them while questioning whether the root causes of such crimes are being effectively addressed.

The panelists emphasised the lack of dignity and fairness faced by female victims, who are often subjected to invasive questioning about their character rather than receiving justice. They also discussed the emotional toll on law enforcement officers, urging for greater sensitivity in handling such cases.

Meeran Chadha Borwankar shared personal insights into the inspiration behind her book, ‘Madam Commissioner’, shedding light on the intersection of gender and leadership within law enforcement.

The session concluded with a call for a collective effort from the public, media, and law enforcement to reshape the narrative surrounding crimes against women and ensure justice for victims.
