Dehradun, 28 Jul: In a powerful show of unity and self-reliance, goldsmiths from 21 states of India came together in Dehradun for the ‘Vocal for Local – Shapat and Samvaad’ event, organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Swarnakar Sangh. The programme was led by Sunil J Singh, Chairman of the National Traders’ Welfare Board, Government of India.
This national-level gathering highlighted the central government’s commitment to strengthening traditional Indian trades, local businesses, and skilled artisans as part of the larger Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
A National Commitment to Local Products
The central moment of the event was the oath-taking ceremony, when thousands of artisans pledged to: “Give preference to Indian-made products, Promote the Make in India mission, and support local artisans and handicrafts.”
Sunil J Singh praised the spirit of the Swarnakar community and said that local artisans are the foundation of India’s economic and cultural strength. He encouraged them to see themselves not only as craftsmen but as nation builders who represent India’s identity across the world.
Weekly Virtual Platform for Artisans
To support traders and artisans directly, Singh also announced the new initiative that a weekly Virtual Conference (VC) would be held every Monday from 3 to 4 p.m., led by the National Traders’ Welfare Board. This platform will allow artisans to raise concerns, give feedback, and connect directly with government representatives — ensuring transparency, speed, and support.
Support from the State Government
The event was also attended by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who appreciated the role of goldsmiths in preserving India’s cultural heritage. He assured full support from the state to boost skill training, digital tools, and better opportunities for artisans.
Goldsmiths from over 20 states stood together to promote Indian-made goods and reduce dependence on imports. Swarnakars have passed down their jewellery-making skills for generations. The event called for preserving, upgrading, and sharing this legacy with the world. Through platforms like the National Traders’ Welfare Board, the Central Government aims to bring artisans into the mainstream economy, offering policy support, visibility, and growth opportunities.
The ‘Vocal for Local’ event in Dehradun marks a turning point in India’s journey towards economic independence — with strong backing from the Central Government, inspired leadership from the National Traders’ Welfare Board, and unwavering support from local artisans across the country.
