Dehradun, 15 Mar: Honey was extracted from the bee hives kept at the Raj Bhavan, here, today. This year, in the first phase, about 41 kg of honey was obtained from 8 boxes. These boxes were installed at the Raj Bhavan during the flower show.
Bees of the Mellifera species have been kept in the Raj Bhavan. It is worth mentioning that, every year, the honey produced in the Raj Bhavan is gifted by the Governor on behalf of Uttarakhand to the most distinguished dignitaries of the country.
Governor Lt-General Gurmit Singh (Retd) observed process of extracting honey today. On the occasion, the Governor said that such activities would help make the people of the state economically prosperous. In the coming time, honey produced in Uttarakhand will find a unique identity in the world. A separate brand of honey will be established here.
He said that, apart from being a centre of attraction from the point of view of tourism, it is necessary to encourage beekeeping as an economic activity.
The Governor added that, in the hill areas of Uttarakhand, agricultural land covers only a small area. The business of beekeeping would be very beneficial for the people. Small farmers and landless people could undertake this activity. He said that nature has given invaluable gifts to Uttarakhand in the form of medicinal plants, aromatic plants, organic and natural farming.
First Lady Gurmeet Kaur, Horticulture Officer Deepak Purohit, National Bee Board member Ajay Saini, etc., were present on the occasion.
