Dehradun, 13 Aug: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) attended a programme organised at the Regional Transport Office (RTO), here, on Wednesday. On this occasion, he said that following road safety and traffic rules is the duty of every citizen, especially in hill regions where road conditions and weather challenges increase the risk of accidents. He stressed that negligent driving endangers not only the driver’s life but also the lives of others.

The Governor emphasised the need to instil awareness of road safety and traffic discipline at the school level so that the coming generation grows into safe and responsible citizens. Noting that Uttarakhand attracts a large number of tourists seeking its natural beauty, he urged visitors to follow local traffic rules, adhere to speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and prioritise safe driving.

The Governor praised the initiative of the RTO Office, Dehradun, to use public transport one day a week, which will not only reduce traffic congestion but also contribute to environmental protection. On the occasion, the Governor felicitated well-behaved drivers and Good Samaritans who had assisted accident victims.

During the programme, the Governor renewed his driving licence following the prescribed procedure at the RTO. Instead of availing any special privileges, he completed all formalities like an ordinary citizen. At a time when many seek recommendations or influence for such tasks, the Governor’s conduct sent a clear message that processes and formalities are equal for all, and that following the law is the duty of every citizen. He added that government services should be transparent, technology-driven, and simple so that every citizen can access them easily without needing recommendations or special favours.

Present on the occasion were RTO (Administration) Sandeep Saini, RTO (Enforcement) Anita Chamola, ARTO (Administration) Chakrapani Mishra, along with other officers and staff members.
