Dehradun, 19 Dec: Founded by Surbhi Malhotra, Naomi Interiors is an interior design and styling studio crafting stunning residential, office, cafe, and lounge spaces. ‘Naomi’ translates to ‘pleasant and beautiful’ and reflects the studio’s mission.

Surbhi’s design instincts centre around designing space that intuitively connects with occupants, elevating all senses of humans and their experiences. Holding an Interior Design Masters’ Degree from Sushant School of Design, she has refined her skills through years of collaboration with India’s top designers.

You’ve worked for over 8 years, but how do you sustain creativity and new ideas in your work?

It stems from deep within me, fuelled by the need to craft a design that engages all senses of a person. I design from the heart, focusing on what feels right for the space and its users.

Whenever I design a space, it’s never about trends but rather about the type of space I am designing, most importantly the person(s) who will be occupying it. For example, is it going to be someone’s home? Is it a lounge? Who is going to be the end user?

Can you identify a single project that defined your professional journey?

One project that defines my journey was redesigning a boutique hotel. By merging modern luxury with nature, I discovered the power of designing spaces that tell a story; engage all human senses, foster sustainability for people and environment, yet being delightful and captivating.

What advice would you give to anyone decorating their space?

Quality is always impactful. Even if you have fewer things, they should be of decent quality.

It will create a more peaceful and beautiful living space. I believe that you don’t need too

many things to make your space look beautiful. Just go for quality over quantity and stick to one theme that you can relate with.

How do you navigate challenges?

Teamwork. Interior design execution is never a one person’s work. There is a team involved at every stage of the project. Whenever we come across a challenge, we sit together and brainstorm on the solutions. A good team, from craftsmen, to site handlers, to salespeople are the pillars of every project.

What is the important part of designing a space?

When designing a space, getting the basics right is crucial: Room sizes and layout, window placement for natural light, furniture placement and planning, and balancing daylight and artificial light. It’s all about creating a space that feels just right in all senses.
