Mussoorie, 6 Jul: Late Sunday night an intoxicated young woman created a massive scene, here, stretching from Mall Road to the Library Police Post. She used abusive language with police personnel and even brandished a slipper at the young man accompanying her in front of onlookers. A video of the entire incident is rapidly going viral on social media. Following the video’s release, questions are being raised about the police’s handling of the situation—specifically, why no legal action was taken against the woman despite her causing a public disturbance and behaving rudely with the police.
According to reports, two young men and two young women were roaming on the Mall Road around 3 a.m. on Sunday. It is reported that one of the women had consumed excessive alcohol, causing her to become uncontrollable for her male companions. As the situation escalated, the young men themselves called the police control room for assistance.
Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene and took the woman to the Library Police Post. Eyewitnesses stated that the woman’s unruly behaviour continued even after reaching the post; she behaved rudely with the officers and hurled abuses, resulting in a prolonged, high-voltage drama. Bystanders recorded the entire incident on their mobile phones, and this footage is now circulating widely on social media.
It is reported that after a long period of persuasion and counselling, the police managed to calm the woman down and subsequently sent her home. However, the major question arising from this entire episode is: when a drunken disturbance occurs in a public place—involving the use of obscene and abusive language and misconduct towards the police—is merely counselling and releasing the individual sufficient action? Locals argue that had an ordinary citizen engaged in such behaviour, they could have faced charges for disturbing the peace, creating a nuisance while intoxicated, and obstructing police duty. Consequently, the police’s lenient stance in this matter has become a topic of discussion.
Following the viral spread of the incident’s video, questions regarding the police’s handling of the situation have arisen on social media. People are questioning why no case was registered despite incidents involving verbal abuse, indecency, and public disorder in the presence of the police; such inaction naturally casts doubt on the uniform application of the law.
Mussoorie Station House Officer (SHO) Devendra Chauhan stated that two young men and two young women were on Mall Road late at night. One of the women was heavily intoxicated and beyond the control of the young men; in fact, it was the men who sought police assistance. The police brought the woman to the police post, counselled her at length, and sent her home safely once the situation had normalised.
This incident has reignited the debate regarding the effectiveness of the police’s approach toward those who create a drunken ruckus in public places in the tourist town of Mussoorie. Locals maintain that such incidents during the tourist season tarnish the city’s image. They believe that the law should be enforced equally on everyone to effectively curb such incidents in the future.
