Dehradun, 23 Apr: The BJP has welcomed the special session of the state assembly on women’s reservation while dismissing the Congress protest on this issue as political hypocrisy. In a statement issued today, Uttarakhand BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt said it is shameless that while Congress voted against the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill in Delhi, it is demanding support for it in the state Assembly.

Responding to media queries, Bhatt asserted that opposing the Bill in Parliament is a grave mistake by Congress and its allies, which has angered citizens and women across the country. He said the special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly has been convened on 28 April to honour public sentiment and expose those who insulted women by rejecting the Bill.

Bhatt claimed that the Congress dharna outside the Assembly Building in Dehradun is a political drama and it is an attempt to absolve itself of guilt. The BJP leader reminded that the same party which now seeks to send a proposal for 33 per cent reservation for the Assembly had rejected the amendment in Parliament. He argued that had Congress supported the Bill there, women would already have secured their rightful representation in the state legislatures.

He further remarked that Congress leaders are under the illusion that people are unaware of constitutional processes, but the public knows well that such Assembly proposals carry no weight. He accused Congress of trying to mislead citizens, saying the party’s opposition to women’s rights is visible to all.

Bhatt added that the Assembly session will reflect the true sentiment of the people, and that voters have already resolved to punish Congress in the upcoming elections for its duplicity on women’s reservation.
