Dehradun, 20 Dec: BJP has welcomed the decision to send the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), calling it essential for the country’s prosperity and development.
Rajya Sabha MP and State BJP President Mahendra Bhatt today asserted that the BJP favours passing this bill with consensus, which is why it has been sent to the JPC for detailed consideration. He countered the Congress’s stance, claiming that those who are now calling this bill as an attack on the federal structure were the ones who ruled under the ‘One Country One Election’ system until 1967. Bhatt emphasised that it is time to rise above party politics in the national interest and move beyond the repeated electoral confusion.
Bhatt stressed that the BJP has fulfilled its promise by bringing the draft of the ‘One Nation One Election Amendment Act’ to Parliament. The Lok Sabha has now sent it to the JPC for consideration of all its aspects, which Bhatt claimed, is a welcome move. He reiterated that simultaneous elections are necessary to increase the pace of development and prosperity in the country. Repeated election notifications and the time involved in the process adversely affect development and public welfare schemes, leading to significant losses of money and time for both the government and the public. Bhatt also reminded that India had followed the principle of one country one election for almost two decades after independence.
