Dehradun, 10 June: BJP has termed the increase in the MSP of Kharif crops, including pulses by Prime Minister Modi, as a great decision in the interest of the farmers. In a press conference hosted at the BJP State Headquarters here today, State President of Kisan Morcha of BJPJogendra Pundeer, today stated that due to the efforts of the government, the country’s total food grain production is going to increase most as compared to past 5 years. He quoted the data derived from the third advance estimates released by the government for 2023 Kharif season.
Sharing the information about the works and various schemes of the central and state government in the agriculture sector in past 9 years, Pundeer reminded that ‘farmer-friendly Narendra Modi Government’ has increased the minimum support price of moong, arhar, paddy, maize and urad dal.
The sharp increase in MSP of so many crops comes as a great news for the farmers across the country. After this decision, farmers will be able to sell their crops at increased prices. Pundeer added that in the past 9 years, PM Modi has taken many important decisions in the interest of farmers. He said, in the latest move, the government has approved the increase in MSP for Kharif crops. With this, apart from getting remunerative price for the produce to the food providers, the efforts to diversify the crops will also get a boost.
Pundeer claimed that the Modi government at the Centre has increased the MSP of tur dal (Arhar of Pigeon Pea Pulse) by Rs 400 per quintal, while the MSP of paddy, maize and groundnut has also been increased significantly. This step of the government will benefit the farmers on a large scale and they will be able to get remunerative prices for the new crop, which has been taken in the interest of the farmers in view of the increasing cost of cultivation. The government has increased the support price of moong dal by 10 percent. At the same time, the minimum support price of paddy has been increased by Rs 143 to Rs 2,183 per quintal. The move is aimed at encouraging farmers to take up paddy cultivation and increase their income.
Pundeer further reminded that the MSP of common grade paddy has been increased by Rs 143 from Rs 2,040 to Rs 2,183 per quintal. The MSP of A grade paddy has been increased by Rs 163 to Rs 2,203 per quintal. The MSP of moong dal has now gone up to Rs 8, 558 per quintal, up from Rs 7,755 per quintal last year. MSP of Jowar Hybrid will now be Rs 210, Bajra Rs 150, Ragi Rs 268, Maize Rs 128, Arhar Rs 400, Moong Rs 803, Urad Rs 350, Groundnut Rs 527, Sunflower Seed Rs 360, Soybean Yellow 300 even as the MSP of sunflower seed has been increased by Rs.360 per quintal.
Pundeer asserted that the increase in MSP of Kharif crops during the year 2023-24 is aimed at ensuring that the farmers get remunerative prices for their crops. The Centre is faithfully following the promise made by the BJP to ensure them returns in form of MSP to 1.5 times the All India Weigthed Average Cost of Production. The expected return to farmers on their cost of production is estimated to be highest in case of tur, soybean and urad followed by bajra. For the remaining other crops too, farmers are expected to get at least 50 per cent margin on their cost of production.
Additionally, in recent years, the government has been continuously promoting the cultivation of a number of crops other than cereals such as pulses, oilseeds and other nutritive cereals by offering higher minimum support prices for these crops. Along with this, the government has also started various schemes and activities like Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), National Food Security Mission to encourage farmers with the aim of diversifying their crops. According to the Third Advance Estimates for 2022-23, the total food grain production in the country is estimated to be a record 330.5 million tonnes, which is 14.9 million tonnes more than the previous year 2021-22. This shows the highest growth in the last 5 years.
During his interaction with the media, Pundeer also shared information about the schemes being run by the Uttarakhand government for the development of farmers. He said that in order to increase apple production and reduce migration in the hills, orchards are being planted on 80 percent subsidy under the Apple Mission.
Along with this, work is being done to increase the production of Kiwi, polyhouses are being constructed for commercial vegetable production and flower production, farmers, especially the horticulturists are being encouraged to do collective farming by forming cluster.
