Dehradun, 13 Jul: Dehradun Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam) has prepared a comprehensive proposal for the improvement and modernisation of major traffic junctions across the city under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The initiative aims to enhance ease of movement, strengthen road safety, reduce traffic congestion and curb vehicular air pollution.

According to the proposal, essential infrastructure would be developed at identified traffic junctions in accordance with scientific traffic management principles. The plan includes improvements in junction geometry, provision of free left turns, proper lane development, safe footpaths and zebra crossings for pedestrians, refuge islands, modern traffic signage, thermoplastic road markings, reflective studs, crash barriers and other road safety equipment. Smart traffic signals, along with CCTV cameras and AI-based traffic monitoring systems, would also be installed wherever required to ensure efficient traffic regulation and surveillance.

Under the said proposal, special emphasis has also been laid on the beautification of each junction. The proposal provides for the development of green belts, landscaping, ornamental plantation, attractive lighting arrangements and the installation of public art reflecting the cultural identity of the city. These measures are expected not only to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Dehradun but also to provide citizens with an improved urban environment.

Municipal Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey asserted that the scientific upgradation of traffic junctions is not limited to improving traffic management alone but would also be a significant step towards reducing road accidents, saving travel time, lowering fuel consumption and improving overall air quality. In line with the objectives of NCAP, the proposal is expected to contribute substantially towards making the city safer, cleaner and more environmentally sustainable.

The proposal prepared by the Municipal Corporation is being forwarded to the competent authority for technical and administrative approval. Upon receiving the necessary clearances, the works will be executed in accordance with prescribed standards and within the stipulated timeframe.
