The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was named after Mahatma Gandhi to honour his extraordinary role in India’s freedom struggle and his lifelong dedication to the uplift of the poorest and most marginalised sections of society. Gandhiji’s vision of Gram Swaraj, self-reliance, dignity of labour and social equality forms the very foundation of this historic legislation.

On behalf of the All India Freedom Fighters’ Samiti, I, the National Women President, strongly oppose any attempt to question, dilute, or alter the name, identity, or spirit of MGNREGA. Mahatma Gandhi is not associated with any single political ideology or government; he is the राष्ट्रपिता, whose ideals unite the nation and guide its moral conscience. Any move that undermines his name or legacy is deeply hurtful to freedom fighters, their families, and millions of citizens who revere his contribution.

MGNREGA is more than a welfare scheme—it is a constitutional assurance of the right to work, aimed at strengthening rural India, reducing distress migration, and empowering women and the economically weaker sections. These objectives directly reflect Gandhiji’s belief that true independence can only be achieved when villages are strong, self-sufficient, and dignified.

The All India Freedom Fighters’ Samiti firmly believes that the legacy of the freedom movement must be preserved with utmost respect. Tampering with schemes named after national icons like Mahatma Gandhi sets a dangerous precedent and weakens the collective memory of our struggle for independence. Development and reform must never come at the cost of erasing history or disregarding the sacrifices that built this nation.

We therefore urge all authorities concerned to respect the sentiments of freedom fighters and the people of India, and to ensure that the name, purpose, and values of MGNREGA remain intact. Upholding Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals is not a political choice—it is a national responsibility.
