Why have not leaders of the Democratic Party in the US not announced that, should Donald Trump takeover Greenland by force or coercion, they would restore the region’s freedom when they come to power? Is it because they are essentially in agreement with Trump, or too confused to have a clear policy? If they were to make that announcement, it would not only have an impact on the ongoing controversy but also hasten their return to power.
As for Greenland, its people should announce a plan to undertake a Gandhian non-cooperation movement against the US colonisers if they do move in. At the present, it does not seem that member nations of NATO have plucked up the required courage to take a strong and united stand against Trump’s moves, particularly if it means defending Greenland militarily. Mere symbolism will not do.
The ‘western’ nations feel that the present crisis will lead to a break up of NATO, as the US is a major partner that contributed greatly to European security against the Soviet Union and present day Russia. Perhaps it is time to take a relook and constitute an alliance based purely on their capabilities, independent of the US. It is not as though they do not have the capacity or the funds required. Trump is right when he says that the US contributed disproportionately to NATO and Europe was piggy-backing on it. It is about time to get out of this complacency.
What POTUS will do to advance his cause in Davos is yet to be known. The only consistency in his politics, the world and the citizens of the US have realised, is self-promotion. Otherwise, he can basically chicken out (TACO) while, at the same time, claiming that he has won a great victory. He has failed to stand up to Russia and China, and his tactics against India have not had the desired impact. (Except that it has woken India up to diversifying its trade and commerce to other parts of the world.)
Most independent commentators in the US have realised that Trump’s mindset is of the shifty real estate developer, always looking to grab land and property by whatever means. (Indians know very well this kind of operator, having many of their own.) He is playing one nation against the other, as in the case of India and Pakistan, and it is a surprise that world leaders have not entirely woken up to that fact. Davos will provide an opportunity to see whether his bluff is going to be called.
